Michael William Desmet, a 33-year-old man, disappeared on August 26, 2005, along with 52-year-old Joseph Clarence Wilma Jr. The two men were last seen leaving Humboldt County, California, and heading to Wilma’s remote property in Covelo. They were driving Wilma's maroon 1998 Toyota pickup truck. Shortly before their disappearance, law enforcement had eradicated a large illicit marijuana garden on Wilma's property.
In April 2007, a hiker found a human jawbone near Wilma's property, which prompted an extensive search of the area. Wilma’s vehicle and additional human remains, including a femur, were recovered. These remains were later identified as Wilma's, confirming that he had been murdered. Despite this discovery, no trace of Desmet was found. Authorities suspect that Desmet also fell victim to foul play, although his remains have never been located.
Law enforcement believes both men were likely homicide victims connected to illegal activity in the area, but no suspects have been identified in the case.
