On the afternoon of July 12th, the 29-year-old was seen getting into a car with an unidentified man and was never heard from again. At the time, Brian, who was known by the nickname 'Sunshine,' was living with his common-law wife of five years and her teenage son.
The couple had recently welcomed a baby daughter. Having been recently laid off from his job, Brian was picking up odd jobs to support his growing family. On the day he disappeared, the only money he had was what he had earned from selling plasma earlier that day. He left without taking any of his clothes or personal belongings. The last person to see him was his wife's son, who witnessed him leaving with the unknown individual.

It wasn't until over a month later, on August 15, 1991, that he was officially reported as a missing person. The man he was last seen with was described as having an unkempt appearance and long hair. Distinctive features included a two-inch scar on his upper left arm and another scar on the right side of his face, just below his eye. A significant development came from the re-interview of the primary witness, the son of Brian's former girlfriend. Now an adult who had recently returned to Spartanburg after many years, he was able to provide a detailed enough description of the man Brian left with for a forensic artist to create a sketch, which was then age-progressed to show what the person of interest might look like today. While authorities have stated there is no direct evidence of foul play, the sheer length of time that Brian has been missing leads them to believe it is a strong possibility.
