In the early evening of October 17, 2022, a 21-year-old female named Rio Jina Boyd left the trailer she shared with her father in Spanaway, Washington. She was reportedly on her way to a friend's house located nearby. When she departed around 6:00 p.m., she left behind her keys, wallet, and identification, taking only her brand-new cellphone with her. At the time of her disappearance, Rio was described as a white female with blue eyes and brown, shoulder-length hair. She has a scar on her left forearm and a small mole above her upper lip. She was believed to be wearing blue jeans and possibly a black Seattle Seahawks jacket. Reports vary on whether she ever arrived at her friend's home, with some stating she never made it, while a volunteer group later spoke to a friend who confirmed she had arrived that evening and showed off her new phone. A deeply concerning turn of events occurred shortly after Rio was last seen. When she did not return home, her father began calling her new phone. A man answered, explaining he had just found the phone ringing on the side of the road. The phone was recovered in the 400 block of Field Road, near Mountain Highway, less than a block and approximately 400 feet from her home. The discovery of her phone, so close to home and so soon after she left, alarmed her family, who noted it was not in her character to be out of touch with them. In the days following her disappearance, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department asked residents and businesses in the vicinity of 198th Ave Ct E and Field Road to check their surveillance footage from October 17th to October 19th, hoping a camera might have captured Rio or provided clues as to what happened. The investigation into Rio Boyd's disappearance remains active, though authorities have not shared any new public information. In the absence of official updates, her family and community have remained steadfast in their efforts to find her. Her friends describe her as a supportive and trustworthy person who brought joy to the lives of others. Her family remembers her dry humor and artistic talents in drawing and glass blowing. Dedicated volunteers travel to Spanaway to conduct searches, following up on any potential leads and forwarding information to the police. Her family has created a GoFundMe to raise money for a private investigator, and events like walks and vigils have been held to keep her case in the public eye. The case is a bewildering one, centered on a young woman who vanished during what should have been a short, familiar walk. The discovery of her only possession, her new phone, abandoned on the roadside so near her residence, remains the most perplexing and unsettling detail in the ongoing search for answers.
