In the autumn of 1983, a sense of community and routine filled the Perkins Adult Home in Riverhead, New York. Among its residents was 69-year-old George Downes, a man with white hair and blue eyes. On the evening of October 17th, he was dressed in a beige pullover sweater, black corduroy pants, and a red and gray striped shirt. He wore glasses and possibly sneakers.
