In the late summer of 1981, the Larsfolk family was settling into a new life in a rural farmhouse on Horseshoe Hill Road in Caledon, Ontario. For 14-year-old Lloyd Eric Larsfolk, who went by Eric, this meant leaving friends behind and preparing to start Grade 10 at a new school. On the evening of August 24, 1981, after dinner, Eric rode his prized red 10-speed bicycle, a recent prize from a Dairy Queen contest, down the road to the neighboring McCormick farm, less than a kilometer away. His father, Lloyd, watched him go, expecting him to return as he often did from visiting his new friend, 13-year-old Kim McCormick. However, on this particular evening, Kim was out babysitting. Eric was last seen on the McCormick property with Kim's 15-year-old brother, John McCormick Jr. The two boys, who were not close friends and had rarely spent time alone together before, were seen driving a field car on the farm. It was the last time anyone reported seeing either of them.

The initial hours after the boys vanished were filled with confusion and a growing sense of dread. Around 10:45 p.m., John's mother, Joyce McCormick, arrived at the Larsfolk's home to ask if they had seen her son, revealing that both boys were missing. A search began, but it was hampered by the darkness. The field car the boys had been driving was found abandoned. Eric's bicycle was also found on the McCormick property, leaning against the house. In the days that followed, police began a more thorough search of the vast 100-acre McCormick farm, which included a gravel pit, fields, and a swamp, but they found no trace of the boys. The initial theory from law enforcement was that the teenagers had run away, perhaps to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, a suggestion that Eric's family found highly unlikely as he had no history of running away, had not taken any clothes, and his new backpack was left in his closet.

The disappearance of Eric Larsfolk and John McCormick Jr. remains an unsolved case that has stretched on for decades, marked by a stark contrast in the reactions of the two families involved. The Larsfolk family, particularly Eric's father Lloyd, embarked on a relentless and painful search for answers, contacting Child Find to circulate his son's photo, following up on tips (even breaking into a home on one occasion based on an anonymous call), and frequently returning to the area to search for any sign of his son. In contrast, the McCormick family remained largely silent, refusing to speak with the media and, according to Lloyd Larsfolk, not actively participating in the search efforts. Suspicion eventually fell upon John McCormick Sr., who had a reputation for being a volatile alcoholic, and a friend of his, George McCullough. John Sr. was considered a prime suspect by police before his death from cirrhosis of the liver in 1987. Despite extensive investigation into both men and searches of the McCormick property using ground-penetrating radar years later, no charges were ever laid, and the boys' whereabouts have never been discovered. The case is a haunting mystery of two boys who vanished on a summer evening, leaving behind unanswered questions and a legacy of enduring grief for a family that never gave up hope of finding their son.
