Summary based on 1 source
On the warm summer evening of July 17, 1998, 17-year-old Gregory H. Cook embarked on what should have been a brief and pleasant sailing excursion on Nottawasaga Bay in Meaford, Ontario. He was joined by two friends, brothers Richard David Rees and Ronald Rees. The trio set out from Sunnyside Beach in a Schwill DS16 sailboat for a short trip on the picturesque but notoriously unpredictable waters of Georgian Bay. The day had been hot, and the initial weather was calm as they departed from a friend's cottage for what they likely anticipated would be a quick sail before rejoining their friends for the evening.

As the afternoon turned to evening and the sun began to set, concern grew among those onshore when the small sailboat did not return. Darkness fell, and with no sign of the three young men, the situation grew more alarming. The beautiful expanse of Georgian Bay, known for its deep waters and the escarpment that can cause abrupt weather changes, held a new sense of foreboding. A search was launched, and the overturned sailboat was eventually discovered, but there was no trace of Gregory Cook or Richard Rees. The body of Ronald Rees was later recovered. It is believed that after a long time in the water, he succumbed to hypothermia.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, it was revealed that Gregory Cook and Richard Rees were not wearing personal flotation devices. This devastating event led to the creation of The Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety, established by Ronald Rees's fiancée, Canadian singer Loreena McKennitt, with the support of the Cook and Rees families. The fund has since raised millions of dollars for water safety education, research, and training in the hopes of preventing similar tragedies. The case of Gregory H. Cook serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the sudden and unforgiving nature of the water and the critical importance of water safety precautions. The official resolution of the case, according to available records, is that Gregory Cook and Richard Rees perished in the boating incident. The families and community were left to grieve the profound loss of three lives taken too soon on a summer night that ended in tragedy.
