An air of concern settled over Mesquite, Nevada, in late August of 2026 when 84-year-old Bill Hanks was reported missing. A well-known and cherished member of the community, Hanks was last in contact with his family on August 28, 2026. His daughter, Amanda Reisinger, received a troubling email from him on August 27th, in which he expressed his love for her and her children and reminisced about the time they had spent together. The email also contained a poignant request for his headstone to mention that he had hiked over 2,000 miles in the Grand Canyon, a testament to his passion for the outdoors. This communication, coupled with his subsequent disappearance, prompted immediate concern, leading his daughter to contact the Mesquite Police Department for a welfare check. When officers arrived at his condominium, they found it empty; his car was gone, but his phone had been left behind.

The search for Bill Hanks began immediately, focusing on the vast desert landscapes he so loved to explore. Known as an avid hiker and storyteller, Hanks had a deep connection with the deserts of Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, and even had several trails in the Mesquite area named after him. He was known to favor back roads and scenic routes, actively avoiding highways and heavy traffic. Authorities and loved ones scoured local trailheads and recreational areas, hoping to find a sign of him or his gold Chevrolet HHR with Nevada license plate 65E265. His daughter contacted park rangers at the Grand Canyon and in the Superstition Wilderness, and hundreds of traffic cameras were checked, all to no avail. Friends also joined the search, motivated by similar emails they had received from Hanks.

Despite extensive search efforts by local friends, family, and law enforcement agencies including the Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire Department, Mohave County Search and Rescue, and Washington County Search and Rescue, there has been no sign of Bill Hanks or his vehicle. His health had reportedly been declining in the year prior to his disappearance after a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2024. Bill Hanks is described as a Caucasian male, standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing between 120 and 130 pounds, with a bald head and a full white beard. He often wore slacks, a plaid button-down shirt, a cowboy hat with a snakeskin on it, and a red bandana underneath the hat, and he also wore glasses. The community holds onto hope, and the Mesquite Police Department continues to ask for anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact them at 346-6911. The case of Bill Hanks is a somber reminder of a beloved community member who seemingly vanished into the landscapes he held so dear, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and a family desperate for answers.
