On July 15, 1972, Anthony Zukewich and a friend took a canoe out onto Clearwater Lake, located northeast of The Pas in Manitoba. According to witnesses, both men were under the influence of alcohol and had brought alcohol with them into the canoe. They also noted that the lake was extremely rough due to high winds.
