On May 22, 1982, Ian Shim was seen for the last time when he checked into the Gran Hotel in Pereira, Columbia. Ian, a resident of Toronto, Ontario, was on vacation in Colombia. Shortly after checking in, Ian had gone for a hike, but never returned to his room to collect his personal belongings.
