On a crisp winter day, March 2, 2003, 49-year-old Fred Frauens embarked on a solo snowshoeing adventure on the majestic slopes of Mt. Hood in Oregon. An experienced hiker and marathon runner, Fred was familiar with the mountain, having visited it on four previous occasions. He set out from the Timberline Lodge around 10:00 a.m., with a plan to trek to the Hogback, a formation situated at an elevation of approximately 10,500 feet. Fred had arranged to meet his wife and sons back at the lodge by 5:00 p.m. However, as the hours passed and daylight began to fade, Fred did not return. By 6:00 p.m., with growing concern, his wife reported him missing, setting in motion a search and rescue operation. The search for Fred was extensive, involving numerous rescuers who scoured the vast and unforgiving terrain of Mt. Hood. Their efforts were severely hampered by the harsh winter weather that descended upon the mountain in the days following his disappearance. Heavy snowfall, with accumulations of over six feet, and occasional whiteout conditions made the search incredibly challenging and dangerous. Despite their exhaustive efforts, no trace of Fred was found. Compounding the difficulty of the situation was the fact that Fred was not well-equipped for prolonged exposure to such extreme conditions. While he was an adept hiker, he had limited experience in winter survival. He was last seen carrying only two apples and a water bottle, and he lacked crucial navigational tools such as a compass or any electronic devices that could have aided in his location. In August of 2003, a glimmer of hope, which soon turned to heartbreak and then confusion, emerged when a body was discovered in the Zigzag Canyon area of Mt. Hood. The clothing on the remains was similar to what Fred had been wearing on the day he vanished. Initially, authorities believed they had found Fred, bringing a somber sense of closure to his family. However, this was later determined to be a tragic misidentification. Fred Frauens was still missing. Fred, a sign painter by trade, had moved with his family to Oregon from California in October of 2002, just a few months before his disappearance. The official search was eventually called off due to the treacherous weather, and though another extensive search was conducted five months later, it yielded no results. The case of Fred Frauens remains an open and unsolved missing person case, a story of a day that began with the promise of adventure and ended in mystery on the slopes of Mt. Hood.
