On a summer day in 1996, 52-year-old Elizabeth Ann Primeau, often called Betty, was with a group of people berry picking in the Torch River area, a remote location near Choiceland, Saskatchewan. At some point during the outing on July 30th, she became separated from the others and was not seen again. When she could not be located, she was reported as a missing person, prompting extensive searches of the wilderness in the surrounding area.
