In the late summer of 1989, a young Indigenous woman named Cecilia Mary Nikal traveled from Smithers to Vancouver, British Columbia. Sources regarding her age vary, placing her between 15 and 18 years old when she arrived in the city on August 1, 1989, to visit her mother.
