On November 25, 1999, the Gypsumville RCMP detachment received a report of an aircraft in distress over Lake Winnipeg near Reindeer Island, Manitoba. The aircraft, a single-engine Cherokee 140, was carrying three people; the pilot and two passengers. The pilot had declared that the engine had stalled and that he was trying to reach Reindeer Island. He then stated that he was going into the water.
