In the quiet, early hours of New Year's Day 2021, a young man named Zachery "Zack" Lefave vanished from a rural road in Nova Scotia, leaving behind a profound sense of loss and a mystery that continues to trouble his community. At the time of his disappearance, Zachery was 20 years old and was just days away from his 21st birthday. He was last seen in Plymouth, Yarmouth County, after attending a New Year's Eve gathering with friends. The Yarmouth RCMP initiated a missing person investigation on January 1, 2021, after it was reported that he did not return to the party he had been at earlier in the evening. Zachery is described as a white male, standing five feet nine inches tall and weighing about 175 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and brown facial hair. His disappearance, which occurred without any clear indication of what might have happened, has left his family and friends in a painful state of uncertainty. The hours leading up to Zachery's disappearance began with him spending the day four-wheeling before meeting friends at a hotel. Later, he and his friends took a cab to a house party in Plymouth, arriving around 11:25 p.m. He reportedly left the party shortly before midnight and began walking. In the minutes that followed, he made a series of phone calls. During one call, he mentioned he was cold and in another, he reportedly said he was with people he didn't know, a call that then cut off. The last confirmed sighting of Zachery was around 12:15 a.m. on Highway 334, where he was seen walking and talking on his phone. At the time, he was wearing a hat, a plaid shirt, and shorts or boxer shorts. The temperature was just above freezing, making his attire concerning for the weather conditions. Some of his personal belongings, including his pants, wallet, hat, and cigarettes, were reportedly found later. In the years since Zachery Lefave was last seen, the investigation into his disappearance has been extensive. The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit has led the effort, collaborating with numerous partner agencies. Countless hours have been dedicated by regional ground search and rescue teams, RCMP Police Dog Services, which included a cadaver dog team from British Columbia, and officers from various RCMP detachments. Investigators have interviewed more than 200 people, following up on numerous tips in the hope of uncovering what happened to him. To encourage anyone with information to come forward, the Nova Scotia Department of Justice has included his case in the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, offering up to $150,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his disappearance. Police have specifically asked to speak with anyone who might have been walking or driving on Highway 334 between Arcadia and Wedgeport late on December 31, 2020, and into the early morning of January 1, 2021. The case remains an active and open investigation, a painful puzzle with a missing centerpiece. For his family and the community, the passage of time has not diminished the hope for answers or the profound ache left by his absence, as they continue to wait for the day Zachery is found.
