In the late evening hours of May 2, 2014, William Alexander Grange, a 67-year-old Canadian visitor, vanished while on vacation in Bermuda. Grange, a retired lawyer from Napanee, Ontario, was staying at the Cambridge Beaches Resort in Sandys parish with his wife. At approximately 10 p.m., he decided to go for a short walk on the resort's property, a simple act that would become the beginning of a lasting mystery. He was last seen wearing beige pants, a blue shirt, a brown jacket, and brown shoes. William, who stood at 5'9" with white hair, lived with short-term memory loss and required daily medication for seizures, a condition that added a profound layer of vulnerability and urgency to his sudden disappearance. The immediate aftermath of William's disappearance sparked a massive and heartfelt response. The Bermuda Police Service, describing the search as a "critical priority," launched extensive land and marine operations. The search quickly grew to encompass the entire island, with police officers, members of the Bermuda Regiment, and K-9 units meticulously combing through the western parishes and beyond. Hundreds of civilian volunteers joined the effort, a testament to the community's compassion, searching parks, railway trails, and coastlines. The search efforts also included volunteer divers and a remote-controlled mini helicopter to scan areas that were difficult to access. William's family, including his son John, flew to Bermuda and became an integral part of the daily search, pleading with residents to check their properties, sheds, and any place where a scared and disoriented person might seek shelter. Despite a few unconfirmed sightings, the exhaustive searches yielded no trace of the missing man. In November 2021, after more than seven years had passed without any contact or sign of life, a court in Ontario granted the family's application for a declaration of death, a legal measure to provide some form of closure in the absence of a body. The disappearance of William Grange from a tranquil resort remains an unsolved case, a somber story of a visitor who vanished, leaving behind only memories and the enduring question of his final moments.
