On July 7, 1973, William Gorrie and his family were seen by a an RCMP patrol boat returning from a day of fishing in Cross Bay, Manitoba. The waves increased in height and he followed the patrol boat, eventually getting his family on board. As a result, the patrol boat had to increase its power, significantly increasing the distance between the two boats.
