On that evening, as dinnertime approached, six-year-old Diane Carrier was asked by her mother to do a simple task: go outside and fetch her older brother, Adolphe, who was playing with friends nearby. Young Diane, described as a gentle girl with curly brown hair and brown eyes who approached people with ease, left her home on rue du Porche to find him. Her brother returned home shortly after, but he came back alone, having never crossed paths with his little sister. This unremarkable moment marked the beginning of what would become one of the oldest and most heart-wrenching unsolved missing persons cases in Quebec's history. The initial moments of concern quickly escalated into a frantic search. When Diane did not return, her mother sent Adolphe back out to look for her, but he could not find her anywhere. Their father searched the nearby wharfs, an area the children were forbidden to go near, while Adolphe retraced their usual play routes through Petit Champlain and the schoolyard. As dusk settled over the city and there was still no sign of Diane, the family’s worry turned to dread. At approximately 5:45 p.m., they made the call to the police, officially reporting their six-year-old daughter as missing. In the days, weeks, and years that followed, family, neighbors, and police conducted extensive searches, but not a single trace of Diane was ever found. Decades have passed since Diane Carrier vanished, but the profound sense of loss has never faded for her family. Her brother Adolphe has been burdened by guilt for years, replaying the thought that if he had just come home on time for dinner, his sister would never have had to go out looking for him.
