On a fall day in 1970, a father and son, Edward and Barry Kevin Bucharest, set out on what should have been a routine boat trip on the Lake of the Woods in Kenora, Ontario. They departed from their family cottage, situated on Kimberly Road on the north shore of Big Stone Bay, in a 14-foot fiberglass boat. The afternoon of November 11th was the last time family members would see the two of them. They were reported missing when they failed to return as expected. The hours of waiting turned into days of searching, as the hope of their safe return began to fade with each passing moment. The vast and unforgiving waters of the Lake of the Woods became the focal point of an extensive search effort. The initial optimism of the search parties was soon met with a grim discovery. The 14-foot fiberglass boat they had taken out was found capsized in the water. Alongside the overturned vessel, searchers also recovered two life jackets and some of their other personal belongings. Despite the recovery of the boat and some of their possessions, there was no sign of Edward or his son, Barry. The circumstances of their disappearance, coupled with the discovery of the capsized boat, led to the heartbreaking conclusion that the two had likely drowned. The case of the missing father and son cast a somber shadow over the Kenora community. The official search efforts eventually concluded, leaving their loved ones with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. The disappearance of Barry and Edward Bucharest remains a tragic event, a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the enduring pain of not knowing the final moments of a loved one's life.
