On a warm summer afternoon, August 3, 1968, twelve-year-old Robert James Brown, affectionately known as Robbie, vanished from the small community of Pefferlaw, Ontario. Earlier in the day, Robbie, his mother, and his younger sister had enjoyed time at Holmes Point Beach in Georgina Township before heading to the nearby Church of the Nazarene day camp where his mother was a volunteer. Around 4:00 p.m., Robbie informed his mother of his intention to walk the short distance, less than 3 kilometers, to their home in the village of Wilfrid. He planned to do his newspaper route for the Toronto Telegram and then return to the camp on his bicycle. At approximately 4:30 p.m., he was seen leaving the campground on foot. This would be the last confirmed time his family would know of his whereabouts. Instead of heading directly home, it appears Robbie made his way back towards the beach. Several witnesses reported seeing a boy matching his description in that area. One camper saw him near the beach around 4:45 p.m. The last known sighting of Robbie was around 5:30 p.m. by two teenagers who saw him standing near the former Oakes Restaurant on Holmes Point Road. Concern grew when Robbie failed to return, and his family’s search later that evening revealed the stack of newspapers he was meant to deliver, untouched at their usual corner. The young boy, who stood about five feet four inches tall with blond hair, hazel eyes, and a freckled complexion, was wearing a red and black plaid shirt, blue jeans, and black work boots when he disappeared. Despite extensive land and water searches by authorities in the days and years that followed, no trace of Robert Brown or his clothing has ever been found. The case was initially handled by the Georgina Township Police Service and later the Ontario Provincial Police before the York Regional Police took over the investigation in October 2008. Over the decades, the mystery of what happened to the energetic and responsible paperboy has endured, leaving his family with unanswered questions and a void that has never been filled. The case remains an active cold case, a poignant and unresolved story of a young boy who set off on a familiar path on a summer day and never made it home.
