On a Sunday morning, just a week before Christmas in 2017, 38-year-old Derrick Chavez was dropped off at the Sandoval County Detention Center in Bernalillo, New Mexico. It was around 9:00 a.m. on December 17th when he arrived at the facility on Montoya Road, intending to visit an individual who was incarcerated.
