In the late autumn of 2017, a sense of unease began to settle over a family in Kitchener, Ontario. On the evening of November 23rd, 24-year-old Yoseph Birhanu-Baynesagn left his family home and made his way to Toronto. The following day, he used a payphone at what is believed to be Union Station to call a relative who lived in North York, telling them he was on his way for a visit. This phone call would be the last time anyone in his family would hear from him. Yoseph never arrived at his relative's home and seemed to have vanished without a trace, leaving his loved ones in a state of confusion and deep worry. As days turned into weeks with no word from Yoseph, his family's concern grew into a painful search for answers. They filed a missing person report with the Waterloo Regional Police on December 2, 2017. His sister described his disappearance as being completely out of character for the close-knit family, stating that he was the type of person who would worry about them and would have eventually called. Before he left in the middle of the night, Yoseph had left a portable PlayStation for one of his sisters with a note containing the password. Investigators learned that he was not carrying a cellphone, and there had been no travel records or any activity on his bank accounts since he was last heard from. The search for Yoseph has been a challenging and heart-wrenching journey for his family and the authorities involved. Police checked local shelters and hospitals in an attempt to find him, but their efforts yielded no new information. A detective with the Toronto Police Service described the case as unlike most missing person cases, where there is usually some indication of where the individual may have gone. In Yoseph's case, it was as if he had "vanished into thin air." His family, desperate for any information that might lead to his whereabouts, hired a private investigator to assist in the search. The mysterious disappearance of Yoseph Birhanu-Baynesagn remains an open case, a painful puzzle with no clear answers, leaving a void in the lives of those who await his return.
