This assumption sparked years of searching across Canada, with a particular focus on the fishing lodges in northern Manitoba, as Bruce was an avid fisherman and skilled carpenter who enjoyed the outdoors. He had also worked as a bartender in the family-owned International Hotel in Leamington. For years, there was no news. Then, nearly a decade after he was last seen, the family's search efforts were renewed with vigor when several tips emerged in 2005 suggesting Bruce had been seen among the homeless population in Winnipeg. This led to a significant campaign in the city; his photo was displayed on city buses, and ads were taken out in the local newspaper, all in the hopes of finding him. Despite these efforts and the reported sightings, the search in Winnipeg did not lead to a reunion, and his family came to believe he was not living on the streets of the city.
