In the autumn of 1974, a 27-year-old man named William Julian Bereziuk, often called Billy, embarked on a wilderness adventure in Alberta, Canada. In October of that year, he departed from Edmonton with a plan to canoe down the Athabasca River. His intention, as he explained to his family, was to spend the winter of 1974 in the remote Birch Mountain area of Alberta. He was expected to return to Edmonton the following August of 1975, but he was never heard from again.
