On August 19, 1994, 17-year-old Angela Mary Arseneault, also known as Angie, spent the day shopping in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, with her common-law husband and a male friend. After they had dinner, Angela was last seen boarding a bus by herself at 11th Avenue and Commercial Drive to head back to the apartment she shared with her partner in Burnaby. It was the last time she was ever definitively seen. When her boyfriend returned to their apartment, he found a scene that was both ordinary and unsettling. The lights had been left on and a window was open, but Angela was gone. Her purse, personal identification, the items she had purchased that day, and $200 in cash for rent were all found inside the apartment. Angela, who sometimes used the surnames Baines or Kennedy, had a challenging youth. After her family moved from Trail, BC, to Surrey, she dropped out of school. For a time, she was involved in the sex trade in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. However, in the six months leading up to her disappearance, her life had begun to stabilize. She was living with her partner, who had helped her leave the streets, and she was reportedly in good spirits. She had been approved for welfare assistance and had been accepted into a school program. Despite these positive steps, she was allegedly being harassed by a former pimp. Angela maintained regular contact with her family and was not considered a chronic runaway; in fact, she had made plans to visit her mother just a few days after she was last seen. A welfare check that arrived for her two weeks after she vanished was never collected. The investigation into Angela's disappearance has been fraught with difficulties and unanswered questions. There are conflicting reports about when she was officially reported missing, with some sources indicating it was two days after she was last seen, and an official inquiry stating it was ten days later, on August 29, 1994. The Burnaby RCMP reportedly did not process the scene at her apartment or formally interview her boyfriend until late September of that year. Initially, her case was viewed by some as a typical instance of a teenage runaway. Over the years, there has been speculation about her fate, including the possibility that she could have been a victim of serial killer Robert Pickton, who was active in the region during that time, although no official link has ever been established. Her family, specifically her mother and grandmother, believe she is no longer alive. Despite the passage of time, Angela's case remains an open and active investigation, a painful mystery for the loved ones she left behind.
