In the remote community of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, a 15-year-old Indigenous boy named Rico Akpaleapik went for a walk and never returned, leaving his family and community in a state of desperate uncertainty. Rico was last seen in the fall of 2024, with some reports indicating the date was September 27 and others October 2. He was reported missing to the authorities on October 4, 2024.
The young man, described as having a slender build, brown hair, and brown eyes, was seen walking alone on a road outside of town. When he vanished, he was wearing a grey hoodie, black pants, black shoes, and a pair of distinctive blue headphones. His family, who describe him as a kind-hearted and loving boy whose smile could brighten any room, remain trapped in a painful reality, waiting for answers.
Immediately following the report of his disappearance, a massive search and rescue operation was launched, coordinated by Nunavut Emergency Management. The effort to find Rico was extensive, involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Baffinland Iron Mines, Canadian Rangers, and numerous community volunteers who searched on foot and with ATVs. The search utilized aerial drones for a wider view of the terrain and even brought in a police dog from Quebec to aid in the efforts on the ground. Despite the comprehensive and multi-agency search by land, air, and water, no trace of the missing teenager was found. After weeks of tireless searching hampered by weather and snow conditions, the active search was officially suspended on October 29, 2024, leaving the community heartbroken but not without hope.
Even though the active search was paused, the Pond Inlet RCMP have continued to investigate Rico's disappearance as a missing person case. The official search for Rico was scheduled to resume in August of 2025, nearly ten months after he was last seen, when weather conditions became more favorable. This renewed effort brought a fresh wave of police presence, search teams, and low-flying helicopters to the area, signaling a continued commitment to finding him. The circumstances surrounding Rico Akpaleapik's disappearance remain unknown, and his case stands as a painful ordeal for his parents and all who know him.
