She and her childhood friend and partner, Eberhard Prange, traveled from their home in Germany to the United States, arriving on April 15, 1991. After a few days in New York, their journey took them to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they were married on April 25. From there, the newlyweds headed to the majestic landscape of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It was in this iconic location that the couple was last seen on May 2, 1991. Tragically, Sibylle was battling terminal leukemia at the time of her disappearance. The circumstances surrounding Sibylle and Eberhard's disappearance are both heartbreaking and mysterious. Shortly before they vanished, the couple visited the Valley National Bank at the Grand Canyon. There, they wired several thousand dollars back to their parents in Germany. Accompanying the money was a letter that contained a cryptic and unsettling message, indicating they planned to venture into the Grand Canyon and not return. The note mentioned their intention to "go to Grand Canyon and hike down and up," and added, "You may be very close to us. Maybe even especially close." This final communication suggested a deliberate departure, leaving their families with a painful and unresolved ambiguity. Following their disappearance, an extensive search was launched, focusing on the popular Bright Angel and Kaibab trails, which authorities believed the couple had intended to hike. Despite the thorough efforts of search and rescue teams, no trace of Sibylle or Eberhard was ever found. An unusual detail that emerged during the investigation was the disappearance of a blue door plaque from their shared home in Germany, which read "Sibylle and Eberhard."
