On July 27, 1981, 14-year-old Stacy Ann Arras disappeared while on a four-day horseback riding trip in Yosemite National Park with her father and a group of six others. The group had arrived at the Sunrise High Sierra Camp and, after settling into their cabins, Stacy decided to go take photographs of a nearby lake. She was accompanied by a 77-year-old man from their group after her father declined her invitation to join them.
As they walked downhill towards the lake, the elderly man became tired and sat down to rest. The rest of the group watched from above as Stacy continued on alone, walking behind some trees and out of sight. When she did not return after a few minutes, the man and other members of the group went to look for her but could not find her.
An extensive search was launched, involving park personnel, volunteers, helicopters, and dog teams. The search efforts covered a five-mile area around the Sunrise High Sierra Camp and Sunrise Lakes, with some lakes being searched in case she had fallen in and drowned. Despite the massive effort, which included over 8,000 man-hours, the only trace of Stacy ever found was the lens from her camera, discovered near the treeline where she was last seen.
Stacy Arras was from Saratoga, California. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5'5" tall and weighed 120 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was wearing an off-white hooded windbreaker, a white jersey blouse, striped shorts, and gray hiking boots. She was also carrying binoculars and an Olympus camera. The case remains a complete mystery, with no tracks or further clues ever being discovered.
