On May 25, 2011, nine-year-old Maleina Luhk and her ten-year-old sister, Faloma, disappeared from their village of As Tao on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. The sisters were last seen at a bus stop near their home, where they were waiting for the school bus to take them to Kagman Elementary School. They never boarded the bus and have not been seen or heard from since. At the time of her disappearance, Maleina was approximately 4 feet tall and weighed 65 pounds.
She has a birthmark on her left cheek and was last seen wearing a white blouse and blue jeans.
The family became aware that the girls were missing that afternoon when they did not return home from school as expected. After the school confirmed Maleina and her sister had been marked absent, their disappearance was reported to the police at 5:30 p.m. An extensive search by law enforcement, including the FBI, was launched immediately. The investigation has not yielded any significant breakthroughs, and the sisters' whereabouts remain unknown.
Several details have emerged during the investigation. Garbage collectors who were near the bus stop earlier on the morning of the girls' disappearance did not see them. They did, however, report seeing a gray Nissan pickup truck in the vicinity of the bus stop on the two preceding Wednesdays, though it is unclear if this is connected to the case. Authorities have stated they believe the girls were abducted by someone outside of their family and have ruled out the parents and most other relatives as suspects.
The case has remained open for over a decade, with law enforcement continuing to seek information from the public. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the location of Maleina and Faloma Luhk. Age-progressed photos of the sisters have been periodically released to the public by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to show what they might look like as they have grown older.
