In the spring of 2019, the disappearance of a bright-eyed four-year-old girl named Maleah Davis from Houston, Texas, sparked a case that would capture the nation's attention and end in heartbreak. The last known images of Maleah while she was alive were captured on surveillance footage on April 30th. Her mother had left the state to attend a family funeral, leaving Maleah and her younger siblings in the care of her then-fiancé, Derion Vence. The chain of events that followed the mother's departure would soon unravel into a complex and devastating investigation. The initial report to authorities was made by Vence on the night of May 4, 2019, when he arrived at a local hospital with his one-year-old son, but Maleah was not with them. Vence initially told police a harrowing story, claiming that he, Maleah, and his son were on their way to the airport to pick up her mother when he pulled over to check a tire. He alleged that three men in a pickup truck attacked him, knocking him unconscious, and when he awoke the next day, his son was with him but Maleah and his car were gone. This report triggered an Amber Alert for the missing four-year-old on May 5th. However, investigators quickly found inconsistencies in his story, which did not align with evidence from surveillance videos. One video showed him leaving his apartment with a full garbage bag in a laundry basket. As the search for Maleah intensified, involving volunteers and Texas EquuSearch, police began to focus their investigation on Vence, eventually naming him a person of interest. Tragically, about a month after she was reported missing, Maleah's remains were discovered in a garbage bag alongside a road in Arkansas on May 31, 2019. The discovery was made after community activist Quanell X spoke with Vence in jail, who confessed that Maleah's death had been an "accident" and revealed the location where he had left her body. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later determined that Maleah's death was the result of "homicidal violence." Derion Vence was arrested and initially charged with tampering with a human corpse. He eventually pleaded guilty to tampering with a corpse and injury to a child, receiving a 40-year prison sentence for his role in the young girl's death. The case of Maleah Davis is a tragic story that began as a missing person report filled with deceptive claims and concluded with the heartbreaking discovery of her death and the conviction of the person responsible.
