On August 21, 2011, 20-year-old Antonio Villegas Jr. vanished from a large, brushy area in south Mission, Texas, leaving behind a perplexing and unsolved case. His disappearance was preceded by a series of at least fifteen frantic 911 calls he made, stating that he was being pursued and potentially abducted by a group of "illegal immigrants." The area where he was last seen, near Inspiration Road and Military Highway, is known for frequent crossings by migrants and human smugglers.
Villegas, also known as Tony, had left his home in Alton, Texas, at 4:00 a.m. on the day he went missing. The distressing 911 calls began at 9:00 a.m., originating from the vicinity of Butterfly Park. In one of the recorded calls, a distressed Villegas can be heard telling the dispatcher, "I can't move man I don't know where to go... I can't walk man I walk forward I walk right I walk left everything's the same."
In response to his calls, the Mission Police Department launched a search and rescue operation. For three days, authorities combed the dense and difficult terrain. However, the official search was ultimately called off due to the extreme weather conditions and the challenging landscape, which had led to the exhaustion of several search crew members. The only trace of Villegas ever found was his clothing. His truck was also discovered in the area.
Despite the cessation of the official search, Villegas's family and community volunteers continued to look for him. The Border Patrol cautioned these civilian search parties about the potential dangers of the area they were searching. At the time of his disappearance, Villegas was described as a Hispanic male with black hair, standing at 5'6" and weighing 175 pounds.
