Karen Ramirez, a 26-year-old native of Honduras, was last seen in southeast Houston, Texas, on the evening of March 24, 2017. She had been at a club with her boyfriend, Miguel Angel Buezo, with whom she reportedly had an argument before they left. Neighbors later reported hearing the couple arguing loudly in their driveway between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. on March 25. During the argument, Buezo was allegedly heard threatening to shoot Ramirez.
Surveillance video from a neighbor's home captured Buezo at the back of Ramirez's car, looking into the trunk before closing it and returning to his house.
On March 31, 2017, Ramirez's red car was discovered abandoned in the 8300 block of Tilgham Street at Port Houston. Investigators found a significant amount of blood inside the vehicle, both on and under the driver's seat and on the passenger seat. A bullet hole was found in the passenger-side door, and a bullet was recovered from under the driver's seat. Further inspection of the trunk revealed a large bloodstain and the odor of decomposition. The pattern of the bloodstains suggested that someone had been shot in the driver's seat, moved to the passenger seat, and then placed in the trunk.
The investigation quickly focused on Miguel Angel Buezo as the primary suspect. On the morning of March 25, Buezo went to his estranged wife's house, claiming he needed to fly to Honduras to visit his sick mother. He convinced his wife to help him move Ramirez's car to a warehouse district miles from his home. His wife later told police that Buezo's brother confirmed their mother was not actually sick. Authorities determined that Buezo fled to Honduras and later moved to Guatemala in January 2018.
In April 2017, Buezo was charged with the murder of Karen Ramirez. Despite extensive searches conducted by law enforcement and volunteer groups like Texas EquuSearch, Ramirez's body has never been found. After years on the run, Buezo was arrested in Guatemala in April 2021 and extradited back to Houston in March 2022 to stand trial. In April 2025, Miguel Angel Buezo was found guilty of her murder. Witnesses described Buezo as jealous and controlling and stated that he had been abusive towards Ramirez in the past.
