Karl Terry Karbowski, a 63-year-old business owner, was last seen at his office in the Reeveston area of Houston, Texas, on August 3, 2002. His employees reported him missing on August 5 when he failed to show up for work at the fence company he owned. At the time of his disappearance, Karbowski was described as a white male, 5'7" to 5'9" tall, weighing around 145-150 pounds, with graying brown hair, blue eyes, and a balding pattern.
He was last seen wearing a burgundy shirt, blue jeans, and dark-colored canvas slip-on shoes.
Nine days after he was last seen, on August 12, Karbowski's Ford F-250 was found abandoned at the corner of Wayside and Interstate 10 in Houston. There was no sign of Karbowski at the scene, but investigators found indications that a struggle had occurred. Foul play is suspected in his disappearance due to the circumstances.
The case took a significant turn on November 18, 2002, four months after Karbowski's disappearance, when his estranged wife, Mariela Quinonez Karbowski, was charged with his murder. Mariela had confessed to the police, claiming that her husband had visited her on the day he went missing and that she had beaten him to death with a two-slice toaster. She further alleged that she disposed of his body, the toaster, and a gun in the Trinity River. The Trinity River is located near the River Bend Tavern, one of two bars owned by Karbowski, which was managed by his son.
Despite police uncovering unspecified DNA evidence that reportedly supported Mariela's confession, the murder charges against her were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence. Karl Terry Karbowski remains a missing person, and his case is classified as an endangered missing person case.
