He was last seen at approximately 2:00 a.m. at the San Franciscan Bar and Grill, located at Third Street and Runnels Street in the downtown area. Reports indicate that Bynum left the establishment with an unidentified man after closing his tab. He never returned home and has not been seen or heard from since. Later that day, he was officially reported as a missing person.
Bynum's disappearance was considered highly uncharacteristic by his family and friends. He had a lunch meeting scheduled with his brother-in-law for August 15, which he never attended. A man described as cheerful, outgoing, and trusting, Bynum maintained close relationships with his father, stepmother, and siblings, who all resided in Big Spring, and he would typically call them several times a week. At the time he went missing, Bynum was employed as a bartender at the Big Spring Fraternal Order of Elks. In his leisure time, he was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle rider and a member of a local motorcycle club.
The investigation into Bynum's disappearance began after his truck was discovered in the parking lot of the San Franciscan Bar and Grill. Since he was last seen, there has been no activity on his cellular phone or credit cards, and no funds have been withdrawn from his bank account. While numerous rumors have circulated regarding his case, law enforcement has been unable to substantiate any of them. Foul play is suspected in Bynum's case, and he is classified as an endangered missing person. Though police searched his home, they found no evidence of foul play or bloodstains. In June 2008, authorities acting on a tip raided a farmhouse north of Big Spring in search of Bynum but found no signs of him.
