On the evening of November 14, 2017, 38-year-old Kevin Guy Hamby disappeared from his home on T Rich Road in Lancing, Tennessee. He was last seen at approximately 7:00 p.m. leaving for a ride on his new black, yellow, and white 2018 Polaris RZR side-by-side, an activity he enjoyed and which brought him some relief from chronic pain. Hamby, a white male with brown hair and blue eyes, stood at 5'11" and weighed around 254 pounds. He had a noticeable limp from thirteen hip surgeries. On the day he went missing, he was reportedly wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans, a black baseball cap, and brown boots. The initial search in the rugged terrain near his home involved law enforcement, search crews, police dogs, helicopters, and drones, but yielded no trace of Hamby or his vehicle. A tracking dog followed his scent for about five miles before the trail went cold. For more than three years, Kevin Hamby's disappearance remained a painful mystery for his family and investigators. His father expressed the family's anguish, noting the difficulty of not having any answers. Hamby had received a medical malpractice settlement due to faulty hip replacement parts, but by the time he vanished, the money was gone. He had generously used it to pay off his father's mortgage, buy him a new truck and tractor, and purchase cars for his teenage stepsons. His hip issues limited his physical activities, making rides on his side-by-side one of his few pleasures. The lack of leads over the years led to much speculation and numerous theories about what might have happened to him. A significant break in the case came in March 2021, when a tip led authorities to a remote, steep area near Pilot Mountain in Morgan County. There, they discovered Hamby's Polaris RZR lodged against a tree, about 250 yards below a ridgeline. A search of the immediate 100-yard radius around the vehicle uncovered one of Hamby's shoes. The following day, the search expanded and investigators found a human skull, later identified as belonging to a male. Nearby, they also located a pair of blue jeans, a hoodie, a belt, a revolver, and a pocket knife that belonged to Hamby. The discovery of these items brought a somber turn to the investigation. The focus shifted from a missing person case to determining the identity of the remains and the circumstances that led to the crash and his death, providing a potential, though heartbreaking, conclusion to his family's long wait for answers.
