In the spring of 2013, a 31-year-old mother of two, Melissa Ortiz-Rodriguez, disappeared from her home in Collingdale, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a life she was reportedly eager to change. On April 19, 2013, she was last seen with plans to take a train to Newark, New Jersey, to spend the weekend with a friend. However, Melissa never arrived at her destination, and all communication from her abruptly ceased. Her estranged husband, Jose Rodriguez, with whom she still lived, reported her missing four days later, on April 23. At the time of her disappearance, Melissa was a devoted mother to her two young daughters and was excited about starting a new job that following Monday, an appointment she would never keep. The investigation into Melissa's disappearance soon uncovered a troubled and complex domestic situation. Melissa and her husband's marriage was fraught with conflict, and police had been called to their home for domestic disputes on multiple occasions. Friends and family revealed that Melissa had recently discovered her husband had fathered a child with another woman and had expressed her desire for a divorce. She was reportedly seeing another man and was taking steps to build a new life for herself and her children. In a significant development just months before she vanished, Melissa had sought a protection-from-abuse order against her husband in February 2013, alleging he had pushed her and broken her phone during an argument, though she withdrew the petition two weeks later. As investigators delved deeper, inconsistencies and troubling details began to emerge regarding her husband's account of the days surrounding her disappearance. Although Jose Rodriguez initially cooperated with the police, he soon stopped and hired a lawyer. Authorities found contradictions in his statements, including his whereabouts on the day Melissa was last seen; cellphone data placed him at their home at a time he claimed to have been at work. Further raising suspicion, neighbors reported that Jose had told them Melissa had been found, even though she was still missing. Investigators also learned that he had checked out a mop and cleaning supplies from his job at Amtrak that same weekend. Shortly after reporting his wife missing, Jose moved with their two daughters to New Jersey and sold the family home. Despite extensive searches and ongoing efforts by law enforcement, Melissa Ortiz-Rodriguez has never been found, and her case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance. In an unrelated matter, Jose Rodriguez was later charged with and pleaded guilty to mail fraud for stealing and selling equipment from his employer, resulting in an 18-month federal prison sentence in 2022. The community and Melissa's loved ones have held vigils, continuing to hope for answers and closure. The disappearance has had a devastating impact on her family; her mother, Olga, passed away without ever learning what happened to her daughter. The case is a sorrowful mystery, centering on a young mother who vanished on the verge of a new beginning, leaving behind her children and a family desperate for the truth. The Collingdale Police Department continues to ask for anyone with information to come forward.
