In the summer of 2023, Tameka Norris was expected to fly from North Carolina to Columbus, Ohio, for a visit with her mother to celebrate her birthday. However, she missed her flight. Despite this, Tameka called her mother, reassuring her that she was still on her way. But she never arrived in Ohio. Instead, Tameka traveled to New Mexico, a move that marked a significant and concerning shift in her life.
Despite the distance, she initially stayed in touch with her mother and aunt through Facebook. This communication, however, would soon come to an abrupt and unsettling end, leaving her family with a growing sense of unease about her well-being and the path she had chosen. The months that followed would only deepen their concerns as Tameka's actions became increasingly unpredictable and isolated.
Upon her arrival in New Mexico, Tameka purchased a small parcel of land in Tres Piedras Estates. This property was undeveloped, lacking basic amenities such as a septic system, running water, or even a proper shelter. The area is known for residents who live "off-grid," and the circumstances of her land purchase were unclear. The last time Tameka was seen was on October 14, 2023, in Tres Piedras. On that same day, she took the troubling step of blocking both her mother and her aunt on Facebook, severing her primary line of communication with her concerned family. Her final post on her Facebook page was on October 20. The combination of her sudden move, the purchase of a remote and undeveloped piece of land, and the deliberate severing of contact with her family created a deeply worrying situation for those who cared for her.
Concern for Tameka's welfare continued to grow, especially given her mother's awareness of her struggles with mental health. Tameka had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in 2018 and was not consistently taking her medication. Her mother was so concerned that she was seeking guardianship over her. After Tameka blocked her, her mother requested a welfare check from the police. When officers visited the plot of land she had purchased, it appeared to have been abandoned for some time. A formal missing persons report was filed on November 20, 2023. Her mother noted that while Tameka had disappeared before, it had never been for such an extended period.
