On a September weekend in 2009, 61-year-old Melvin "Mel" Nadel, an experienced bowhunter and respected gym owner, embarked on a hunting trip in the scenic but rugged terrain near Pecos, New Mexico. Accompanied by two friends, the group set up camp in the Elk Mountain area of the Santa Fe National Forest.
