In the early morning hours of October 2, 2008, 44-year-old Darla Kay McCormick left her job at the Eddy County Detention Center in Carlsbad, New Mexico, before her shift was over. It was noted that she seemed upset at the time she departed from her work without permission at approximately 2:30 a.m. Later that morning, around 8:00 a.m., she had brief contact with her family via email and a telephone call, which would be the last time anyone is known to have heard from her.
