On the evening of May 10, 2006, 19-year-old Jessica Jo O’Grady left her apartment in Omaha, Nebraska, between 10:45 and 11:15 p.m.. She informed her roommates she was going to her boyfriend's house. At 11:48 p.m., she made a cell phone call to her boyfriend, which was the last time anyone ever heard from her. When Jessica, a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and an employee at a steakhouse, failed to show up for work, her family reported her missing.
This was considered highly uncharacteristic of her, as she was known to be in regular contact with her family and friends. All attempts to reach her went directly to voicemail, and she never collected her last paycheck or accessed the money in her bank account. Her personal belongings, including her cherished pet cat, were left behind in her apartment.
Several days after she was last seen, Jessica’s gray four-door Hyundai Accent was discovered locked and parked near the Oak View Mall, across from the restaurant where she worked. There were no immediate signs of a struggle in or around the vehicle. The investigation soon focused on her boyfriend, Christopher A. Edwards. With permission, authorities searched the room in his aunt's house where he was living and found significant evidence of a violent crime. Numerous bloodstains, later identified as Jessica's, were found on the headboard, mattress, comforter, furniture, walls, and ceiling. It was apparent that someone had attempted to conceal the blood by painting over it and flipping the mattress. Further evidence was found in the garage, including a trash bag with bloodstained towels and a receipt from a local drugstore for poster paint, white shoe polish, and correction fluid, purchased by Edwards the night Jessica disappeared. A dirty shovel and garden shears with blood on the handles were also found in his car's trunk, which was also stained with blood.
In June 2006, Christopher Edwards was arrested and charged with the murder of Jessica O'Grady. Investigators believe the motive was related to Jessica telling him she was pregnant, as he was also involved with another woman who was pregnant with his child. Authorities theorize he used a sword in the commission of the crime, as Jessica's blood was found on two swords in his possession. Despite the substantial amount of blood evidence indicating she could not have survived, Jessica's body has never been located. In April 2007, Edwards was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 100 years to life in prison, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings. This case marked a significant moment in Nebraska's legal history as it was the first murder conviction in the state secured without a body or a confession. The search for Jessica has continued over the years, including an archaeological dig at her boyfriend's father's home, but her remains have not been recovered.
