Allen Clarence Theis, a 52-year-old man from Eden Valley, Minnesota, traveled to Lewistown, Montana, in November 2003 for a hunting and rock-collecting vacation. He checked into the Super 8 motel on November 22, with the intention of staying for two nights. Theis, described as a responsible and avid outdoorsman, had informed his mother he would return home by the end of the month.
Theis failed to check out of his motel on November 24, and two days later, on November 26, he was reported missing. An inspection of his motel room revealed that most of his personal belongings had been left behind. The only items missing were his rifle and his hunting clothes. This discovery prompted a search for Theis and his vehicle.
A significant break in the case came when a search plane located Theis's truck parked near the Stafford Ferry on the Missouri River. Inside the vehicle, investigators found his empty rifle case and a pair of boots on the floor.
Despite this discovery, extensive searches of the surrounding area yielded no further clues as to Theis's whereabouts. Although he had previously lived near the area he was visiting, he had not been back for a considerable amount of time.
Theis had been a respected employee at Geocomm, a global positioning system company, for approximately ten years before his disappearance. In the absence of any new evidence or contact, Allen Theis was legally declared dead eight years after he was last seen.
