During the call, she requested an online money transfer to cover the 740-mile journey back home, expressing her wish to take her children trick-or-treating for Halloween.
Her friend agreed to send the money, and Knows His Gun stated she would be waiting at the Walmart's customer service counter. However, when her friend called back approximately 15 minutes later to confirm the transfer, Knows His Gun's phone was no longer working, and she never collected the money. Some reports suggest a spelling error in the money transfer may have caused a delay, requiring correction. By the time the corrected transfer was sent, the Walmart had closed for the evening. Freda Jane Knows His Gun has not been seen or heard from since that day.
Her family officially reported her missing on November 14, 2016, after she failed to attend the funeral of her aunt, with whom she was very close. Prior to her disappearance, her family noted she had been spending a significant amount of time in Billings, Montana, where she had reportedly fallen in with a dangerous crowd and had begun struggling with drug abuse.
