In the winter of 1994, a heart-wrenching story began to unfold in Livonia, Michigan, with the reported disappearance of a four-year-old boy named D'wan Christian Sims. On December 11, his mother, D'Wanna Harris, contacted authorities to say her young son had vanished while they were on a shopping trip at the local Wonderland Mall. She told police that D'wan disappeared around 2:30 p.m. as they walked in a corridor between a Target store and the main shopping center.
At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being three feet tall and fifty pounds, and was reportedly wearing a blue hooded winter jacket over a windbreaker, dark blue sweatpants, and FILA sneakers. An extensive search of the mall and surrounding areas was launched, but no trace of the little boy was found.
As the investigation into D'wan's disappearance deepened, inconsistencies in his mother's account began to surface, casting a shadow of doubt over the initial report. Investigators reviewed the mall's surveillance footage from twelve cameras, but found no evidence that D'wan had ever been there that day. The tapes did, however, show D'Wanna Harris entering the mall alone an hour after she claimed her son had already vanished. Furthermore, no witnesses who were at the mall could recall seeing the young boy with his mother. Police administered two polygraph tests to D'Wanna, both of which she failed. In contrast, D'wan's father took and passed a polygraph and was cleared as a suspect in his son's case.
