On April 24, 1993, 26-year-old Virginia Sue Pictou-Noyes, a mother of five from Easton, Maine, and a member of the Mi'kmaq Nation, became a patient at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was taken there for treatment after being brutally assaulted outside a tavern by her husband, Larry Noyes, and his brother, Roger Noyes Jr. The assault led to Larry's arrest for domestic assault and Roger receiving a court summons.
