Eighteen-year-old Christopher Nathan Shipley, along with his friends Kyle Chapman and Timothy Michael Bennett, decided to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and go sailing on Tuttle Creek Lake in Riley County, Kansas, after their classes on December 4th. The three young men, all experienced sailors and qualified sailing instructors, set out from the Blue Valley Yacht Club in a yellow 15-foot racing sailboat owned by Chapman. They left their shoes on the dock, a silent testament to their intention of a brief adventure on the water. However, as the hours passed and they did not return, concern grew among their friends and family. A friend reported them missing on the evening of December 5th, after they failed to return to their campus residence.
The search for the three students began, and two days after they were last seen, their sailboat was discovered empty and adrift on the lake. The boat's keel and rudder were detached, indicating they had encountered significant trouble in the water. On the same day, the body of Timothy Bennett was found in Carnahan Creek, still wearing his life jacket. Despite the mild temperatures, which had reached into the seventies, the sailing conditions on December 4th had been described as "terrible" with strong winds. Authorities believe the trio ran into trouble due to the hazardous conditions on the lake. The water temperature was cold, around 49 degrees, and it is believed that the young men were likely dressed for the warmer air temperature, not for the frigid water, putting them at high risk of hypothermia.

The search-and-rescue mission transitioned to a recovery operation, with officials acknowledging the slim chance of their survival in the cold water. Christopher, known as Chris to his friends and family, was a freshman at Kansas State University, majoring in animal sciences. He was an active member of the university's marching band and had also been involved in the band at Olathe South High School. The disappearance of these three promising young men, all of whom were also Eagle Scouts, was a profound loss for their families and the university community. The case remains a heartbreaking reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the tragic loss of three lives cut short. The bodies of Christopher Shipley and Kyle Chapman have never been recovered, and they are presumed to have drowned in the waters of Tuttle Creek Lake.
