She departed from Louisville International Airport on September 14 and, upon her arrival in Florida later that day, she telephoned her mother to confirm she had landed safely. That was the last time her family ever heard from her.
A week after her last contact, Petty's husband, Bobby Petty, informed her family in Kentucky that she was missing, providing no further details. Alarmed, her brother, Ron Royce, and other family members traveled to Florida. According to Royce, Bobby Petty was unwelcoming and annoyed by their presence, eventually telling them he believed his wife had "took off with some guy." He showed no interest in searching for her or investigating her disappearance. It is considered uncharacteristic of Olive Petty to not maintain contact with her loved ones, as she attended her family reunion annually and spoke with her mother at least once a week.
Since her disappearance, there has been no activity on Olive Petty's credit cards, bank accounts, driver's license, or Social Security number.
