Leroy Mills Sr., a 77-year-old Black male, was last seen on the evening of March 21, 1988, leaving his residence on Fairview Street in Lake City, Florida. A neighbor reported him missing the following day, March 22, 1988, and he has not been heard from since. Two days after his disappearance, on March 24, his wallet was discovered in a dumpster behind Weggie's Saloon on US 441.
Intensive search efforts were launched in the wake of his disappearance, with investigators on horseback combing through woods, swamps, and neighborhoods, and searching dumpsters. A task force was also formed to investigate his case. Despite these extensive searches, Mills was never located. The investigation into his disappearance was hampered by a case file that reportedly contained only six pages. An odd note attached to one of the pages indicated that he was removed from the National Crime Information Center as a missing person during an audit by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Prior to his disappearance, Mills had been gambling with a neighbor, Carlis Lindsey Sr. Mills had reportedly told people that if anything were to happen to him, Lindsey would likely have knowledge of it. This led to Lindsey being considered a person of interest in Mills's case, though he was never formally charged in connection with the disappearance.
In an unrelated case, Carlis Lindsey Sr. was later imprisoned for the 1991 murders of his girlfriend and her brother at his home. Lindsey died in prison in 1997.
