In the quiet community of New Market, Tennessee, the life of 31-year-old David Brett McAfee, a husband and father of three, took an unforeseen and alarming turn on October 28, 2022. On that Friday morning, his fiancée saw him in bed before she left for work. Later that day, a neighbor saw him working on a friend's truck. Around 2:30 in the afternoon, he reportedly received a ride to a local BP gas station on Asheville Highway, where he was seen on video surveillance buying a pack of cigarettes. This would be the last confirmed public sighting of David McAfee. His family describes him as a beloved individual, the life of the party, and someone who would never willingly sever contact with his loved ones. The hours that followed his visit to the gas station are muddled with uncertainty and strange occurrences. His fiancée, Courtney Campbell, arrived home from work to find him gone. She noted that the garage door was unlocked and he had left both of his jackets at home. At approximately 5:30 p.m., she spoke with him on the phone, and he told her he was still working on the truck. However, at 7:30 p.m., a series of three alarming messages were sent from David's iPhone to his wife's phone, indicating that a crash had been detected and emergency services had been called. The messages provided an approximate location in the Jefferson City area. Despite this, when his fiancée contacted Jefferson County dispatch, she was informed that no crashes had been reported that night. She went to the location indicated by the phone's alert but found no evidence of a crash. The search for David began with a troubling and perplexing lead. The day after he was last seen, his fiancée filed a missing persons report. About a week later, detectives discovered his iPhone behind the Providence Church in Jefferson City, near the area from which the crash detection alert had originated. It appeared as though the phone had been thrown, leading to the theory that the impact may have triggered the false crash report. The last ping from his phone was on October 29th in the Walnut Avenue area of Jefferson City. Despite search efforts by his family and law enforcement, no further clues to his whereabouts have been found. The case remains open and is being actively investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, who urge anyone with information to come forward. His family continues to hold out hope for answers, pleading with the public for any information that could bring closure to their agonizing uncertainty.
