In the early morning hours of January 24, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Mahic went overboard while the ship was off the coast of Broward County, Florida. The vessel was located about 37 miles east of the Hillsboro Inlet, near Pompano Beach, at the time of the incident. The event was witnessed by several other crew members who were with him at the time.
The ship's captain was immediately alerted, and the vessel was stopped to begin a search for Mahic. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami was notified of the man overboard emergency at roughly 2:40 a.m. A comprehensive search and rescue operation was launched, involving a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the Cutter Paul Clark, and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane. The *Majesty of the Seas* remained in the area, circling until about 6:43 a.m. before the Coast Guard took over the search and the ship continued to its homeport of Port Everglades. After searching more than 1,388 square miles for 24 hours, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended their search for Mahic.
