On November 25, 2004, 76-year-old Charles Franklin Huff was last seen at his home in the 3900 block of Laurel Branch Court in Lakeland, Florida, at 8:00 a.m. He was believed to have departed for a hunting trip, a favorite pastime of the retired truck driver. His wife became concerned when she returned home from work to find him gone and a package of chicken left spoiling in the sink.
Her worry grew when he had not returned by 6:00 p.m.; he had uncharacteristically left no note, something he usually only did for short trips. She officially reported him missing at 1:00 a.m. the following morning.
The day after his disappearance, Huff's white 1994 Mazda pickup truck was discovered on Tanic Grade near Main Grade, approximately six miles inside the expansive 50,000-acre Green Swamp Wildlife Management Area. This area, known for its challenging and swampy terrain, was one of Huff's preferred hunting locations. There was no sign of Huff at the scene, though his sneakers were found inside the vehicle. The weather on the night he went missing was very cold, raising concerns that he could have succumbed to hypothermia if he was without shelter. It is believed he was carrying a. 22-gauge rifle at the time of his disappearance.
An extensive and exhaustive search of the Green Swamp commenced, involving multiple agencies, helicopters, canine units, and numerous volunteers on foot and all-terrain vehicles. On one day, the search party consisted of over 100 people. Despite these significant efforts, no trace of Huff was ever found. Huff had undergone heart surgery five years prior to his disappearance and was also a borderline diabetic without his medication.
In the absence of any evidence or leads, Huff's case grew cold. His loved ones came to believe he was no longer alive and may have been a victim of foul play, speculating that he could have been robbed for his watch, ring, or his rifle, which was valued at an estimated $500. However, no evidence has ever surfaced to support this or any other theory.
