He has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, Davies was described as a Caucasian male, 5'11" tall, and weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He wore glasses with wire frames or contact lenses and was last seen wearing a black sports watch on his left wrist. His distinguishing marks included a scar on his right index finger, a vaccination scar on his left shoulder, shingles scars on his chest and back, and a missing left eyetooth. He also had a previous rotator cuff injury on his right shoulder, a knee that frequently swelled with fluid, and had undergone surgery to remove nasal polyps. He may have also had two circular scars on his right shoulder blade.
A significant development in the case came in April 1994, four years after he vanished, when his black 1992 Jeep Cherokee was discovered at an airport parking garage. The vehicle was located in the vicinity of the 2200 block of east Imperial Highway in El Segundo, California, nearly 2,500 miles from where he was last seen in Atlantic Beach. This discovery led the El Segundo Police Department to take over the investigation into Davies's disappearance. Due to the location of the vehicle, some law enforcement agencies now list El Segundo, California, as the place of his disappearance.
